This report covers the current position for which statistics are available regarding the mineral
industry in the UK. These are available for the period leading up to the summer of 2011. The
facts and figures contained within are as derived from the UK Agg-Net, The Coal Authority,
The Minerals Products Association, Office for National Statistics, British Geological Survey
and the BBC.
Construction Materials
According to the Mineral Products Association, UK mineral products industry makes the
following contribution to the economy:
1. Annual production is 250mt with an industry turnover of E9bn
2. Turnover for industries that are supplied comes to E400bn employing 2.5 million.
3. The construction industry itself is worth f120bn and employs 70,000 individuals.
According to the MP A quarterly report of July 2013, there was an improvement in the sales
of aggregates, ready mixed concrete and asphalt in the second quarter. Following a poor first
quarter, second quarter sales volumes increased by 14% for crushed rock aggregates, 9% for
sand and gravel aggregates, 18% for ready-mixed concrete and 9% for asphalt, all compared
with the same period of 2012. The report goes on to indicate that when comparisons are made
between June 2012 and June 2013, the overall aggregate trend has been down 1 this is
made up of a 6% decrease in sand and gravel and a 2% increased in crushed rock production.
It is felt that the industry has now bottomed out and is starting to recover. House building
activity is continue to improve, however asphalt sales volumes are down due to the 41%
decrease in road construction in 2012.
