Methane emission reduction can effectively control temperature rise in the short term and is a powerful lever to mitigate the greenhouse effect. Coal mining and post mining activities are the largest sources of methane emissions in China. Satellite ground collaborative monitoring of methane emissions can provide important support for emission reduction. The remote sensing research group on carbon emissions and air quality at China University of Mining and Technology used the domestically produced Gaofen-5 satellite to reveal the methane point source emission characteristics of the coal industry in Shanxi Province. Combining the "bottom-up" and "top-down" methods, the methane emissions from more than 600 coal mines in Shanxi Province were estimated.

The relevant results of this study have been published in the form of two papers, one titled "Individual Coal Mine Metal Emissions Constrained by Eddy ovariance Measures: Low Bias and Missing Sources", published in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics (Top 1 Journal of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), with Professor Qin Kai as the first author and Professor Jason Cohen as the corresponding author. Another paper titled "Research on Methane Point Source Emission Characteristics in the Coal Industry of Shanxi Province Based on Gaofen-5 Satellite" was published in the Journal of Coal Science, with Professor Qin Kai as the corresponding author.

The remote sensing research group on carbon emissions and air quality is jointly led by Professor Qin Kai and Professor Jason Cohen. Focusing on the needs of carbon reduction and air quality improvement, the group focuses on the environmental and climate impacts of the energy industry, and uses space ground observation methods to conduct research on "remote sensing inversion emission quantification impact attribution".
