Contribution:
His research on remote sensing of mining areas has greatly impacted and opened up many research avenues on the sustainability of mining, which he has also explored with a vast network of international collaborators spanning multiple disciplines. For instance, he quantified tropical deforestation caused by mining and investigated energy transition pathways with ecologically responsible mining. His early research resonates with its relevance in real-world applications, extending well beyond academia as various media outlets, NGOs, and industries have utilised my findings. In summary, his early career achievements have yielded significant contributions to the research domains upheld by the International Society for Mine Surveying, advancing the remote sensing of mining and environmental assessments and strongly supporting open science.
Featured Publications:
1.How to fuel an energy transition with ecologically responsible mining
2.An open database on global coal and metal mine production
3.An update on global mining land use
4.A pantropical assessment of deforestation caused by industrial mining
5.A global-scale data set of mining areas
